The waiting room for the ER didn't buzz or bustle with activity at 1 am; it droned. The sounds of tired equipment and even more tired staff created a monotonous white noise that fluttered about the few unfortunate souls that were around to hear it. Not a person made a sound above a murmur, and a few people sat in clusters around the room, all of them giving strangers a wide berth. No one felt sociable in the ER at 1 am.

It was late. Pietro could hear the clock in the kitchen ticking away quietly as he stood in the doorway of the junk-he mentally corrected himself-nursery, shifting on his feet as he watched the twins, his boys, sleeping. A duck-shaped nightlight threw a dim golden glow into the room, illuminating two tiny little faces, so similar in appearance and yet so different.
He smiled softly and leaned against the doorjamb, careful not to make any noise. Jared and Roic had finally settled down into a normal sleeping pattern, and he didn't want to disturb them. Not when he and Lance were finally able to sleep more than three hours at a stretch.
